At a glance

Travel access backed by citizenship.

The passport is your international travel document. The nationality behind it is what gives you a lasting connection to Argentina.

The travel document

  • Ordinary passport validity Ten years for adults; five years for minors.
  • Schengen short visits Visa-free access for qualifying stays, within the 90-days-in-180 limit.
  • United Kingdom Qualifying visits with an approved ETA.
  • Japan Visa-free qualifying short visits of up to 90 days.

The citizenship behind it

  • A home in Argentina The right to enter and live in your country of citizenship.
  • Regional connections Mercosur travel and residence arrangements, subject to their conditions.
  • Your own travel profile Assess the destinations and permissions that matter to your family.
  • Separate residence decisions Citizenship and a passport do not automatically establish tax residence elsewhere.
Where can you travel?

Access to destinations that matter.

Visitor access, electronic authorisation and permission to settle are different benefits. Evaluate each destination against what you actually want to do there.

Europe and the Schengen Area

Argentine citizens can undertake qualifying short visits without a Schengen visa, generally for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

This enables visits to destinations such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal. It does not grant EU citizenship or a general right to live or work in Europe.

Check applicable border and electronic travel-authorisation requirements before departure.

United Kingdom

Argentine passport holders can apply for a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation for qualifying visits of up to six months.

An ETA is a pre-travel permission. Employment and settlement require the relevant immigration status.

Japan

Argentine nationals can visit Japan without a visa for qualifying tourism, family visits and other permitted non-remunerated activities, for up to 90 days.

Long-term residence and paid employment require separate permission.

Canada

Canadian eTA access is conditional. An Argentine passport holder must have held a Canadian visitor visa within the previous ten years or hold a valid US non-immigrant visa when applying, and meet the other eTA conditions.

The option applies to qualifying air travel. Those who do not qualify, or who arrive by land or sea, generally need a Canadian visitor visa.

United States

Argentina is not currently on the US Visa Waiver Program list. An Argentine passport alone does not make you eligible for ESTA.

Ordinary tourism and business travel generally require the appropriate US visa. Assess US access separately if it is central to your plans.

South America

Argentine citizens can use their DNI or passport for travel to numerous Mercosur and associated countries, subject to the relevant entry rules.

Regional visitor access and regional residence applications are separate matters. Check the conditions for the country where you intend to stay.

Entry remains subject to destination rules, purpose of travel and individual admissibility. Passport validity, onward travel and other evidence may be required.

Regional opportunities

Mercosur matters. Understand when its benefits apply.

Argentine citizenship can be relevant to residence plans elsewhere in South America. The applicable agreement and your naturalisation history determine the route available.

Mercosur nationality-based residence arrangements can offer qualifying citizens a route to temporary residence, followed by permanent residence subject to the relevant requirements.

Newly naturalised applicants should check eligibility carefully. Some arrangements require a minimum period of naturalisation: Argentina’s consular guidance for the Argentina–Brazil agreement specifies five years for naturalised nationals.

Before treating regional residence as an immediate benefit, confirm the destination’s rules and how they apply to citizenship acquired through the investment route.

This assessment is particularly relevant if your main objective is to live or work in another Mercosur country.

Passport strength

Compare the access you will actually use.

A global ranking is a starting point. The more useful question is what an Argentine passport adds to the citizenships, visas and residence permissions you already hold.

Passport indices use different methods and may combine visa-free access, visas on arrival and electronic permissions differently. A single destination count does not describe your entire travel position.

  • Your regular destinations Identify where the passport would reduce application friction.
  • Your family’s plans Separate short visits from education, employment and relocation.
  • Your long-term options Assess the value of Argentine citizenship alongside your existing nationality.
How to obtain an Argentine passport

First citizenship. Then your passport.

A prospective foreign applicant must first establish eligibility for Argentine citizenship. The passport is issued through the relevant documentation process after citizenship is obtained.

Citizenship by investment

Argentina has announced a non-refundable Treasury contribution from US$350,000 or subscription to a programme-specific government security of US$800,000. Eligible family members can be included with additional contributions.

Applications undergo government assessment. We provide expert guidance from initial eligibility review and document preparation through the application journey and the steps following approval.

Common questions

Before you decide

Does the Argentine passport let me live in Europe?

It offers qualifying short-stay access to the Schengen Area. It does not provide EU citizenship or general European residence and employment rights.

Can I buy an Argentine passport?

The investment programme is a route to apply for citizenship. A financial contribution does not guarantee approval, and passport issuance follows the applicable citizenship and documentation procedures.

Does citizenship automatically reduce my taxes?

No. Your tax position depends on your existing obligations, residence and other relevant rules. Assess any relocation or tax plan separately with appropriate professional advice.

What if I already have a strong passport?

The additional value may lie in citizenship and a permanent connection to Argentina rather than extra visitor destinations. Consider your relocation, family and long-term objectives alongside the capital commitment.
